- Turtle Nest by Mike and Mickey Marinis from Ohio
Mike, digital cameraman and webpage designer, sent us this WONDERFUL photo collection (follyturtles'
first original digital photos) of one their experiences with loggerheads and Crew at Folly Beach, June, 1999.
- Sea Turtle
by Anne Bellis, Huntsville, Alabama
Written after Anne's first involvement with loggerhead sea turtles at Folly Beach in 1998. Anne visited again in June, 1999, shared her poem, and wonderful stories
of teaching her students about sea turtle biology.
Mother sea turtle come out tonight,
Make a path in the full moon light.
Glide your body along the land,
And lay your eggs deep in the sand.
Slowly and carefully turn around.
Go back to the ocean without a sound.
Little turtles as small as can be,
How many will make it back to the sea?
Which of you will grow big and strong,
And return to the place where you belong?
And James, one of Mrs. Bellis' 4th grade students in 99/00, inspired by her and the sea turtles' story, shared his turtle poem with us ...
A turtle seems to cry when it leaves its young.
The eggs lay deep in the sand alone for a long time.
When they hatch
They have no clue about the dangerous journey ahead.
How many will make it? That is the mystery.
I hope at least one grows up to do the same thing.
